  1. This is the map I was talking about concerning being a woman as a pre-existing condition. Maybe we could break down a particular statistic state by state and demonstrate that somehow with an interactive map.

  2. This map is kind of amazing. I honestly was completely unaware about this, but im wondering how we could communicate this as a performance. I think we keep leaning toward more installation based projects rather then performances... maybe? I dont really know. I will keep searching!

MAYBE we should just stick to your "this girl is now pregnant" approach even thought I know we wouldn't be brave enough to actually act on it. LOLz

  4. You could always do some kind of performance, and, pass out a copy of the map as an aside.

  6. I like where this is going. Ariel, thanks for sharing the project. I found it powerful.

Stir me in the right direction if I am wrong, but this is the drift I'm catching from our project:

    - Our concern is that we are astonished that women are paying more for their health insurance in other states, by simply being a woman as it is categorized as a pre-existing condition.

    - We want to make known that the Affordable Care Act equalizes this gender discrimination.

Gender discrimination, equality, politics, voting/ election, money, women, insurance... are the key words came to my mind.
For me, money and equality stood out the most. Why should anyone have to pay more to receive a better health care for simply being the sex we are born with? And why should some women in another state have to pay more for their health?

I am excited to turn this performance into a question or facts that challenges or shock our audience, rather than a political campaign performance. Rather than having people say, "Oh, they are democrats, pro-Obama Care." I would rather people say, "Wow, I didn't know that women in Wyoming have to pay 76-100% than women in California for health care!"

I think the map is a great tool, but we might want to consider that not many people memorized the map of the states. I think it is more powerful when the names of the states are made known, and also number figures for people to grasp how much is 76% more than what Californians are paying. I think we can use this map and/or to create an even more powerful map, lawn stands, hand outs, or performance. Maybe we can use enlarged monopoly money and write something like "If you are a woman and currently live in Wyoming, you have to pay (this much) for health insurance. But in California, you pay (this much)...." OR get the audience to ask "Why" questions in their daily lives. Like a powerful commercial, conclude with an sentence like Why do women in other states have to pay more for their health? OR an activity that we do at the same time in different sites of the campus, or do together at the same place that relates to this issue.

I desire a performance that is poetic, yet powerful. Almost all the performing artists that we've learned in class who are doing an active performance submerged themselves in the environment. Somehow that is very appealing to me. Rather than holding out a sign that curses everyone who are ignorance about this news, or aggressively approach bystanders to swallow this information, these artists voiced their emotions through an activity because they want their feelings/opinions to be heard or seen, yet allow the performance to experienced powerfully by a few.

Here are some thoughts I'm asking myself:

    - What are my emotions? What are the emotions creating this performance?

    - Am I doing this for me, my group, or for the women who are in other states?

    - Is it important that we, the performer, gain something from this experience? What am I gaining personally from this performance?

  7. Here are some more interactive maps, these concerning abortion rights/maternity care in the United States:https://www.thisispersonal.org/

My emotions are obviously anger, I don't think I'm very graceful in asserting my opinions whatsoever.

I hope that through our performance we could at least spark interest in one other person to share with someone else.
